About me

My interest in turning started in the school woodwork class and although this was only a very brief introduction , it did catch my imagination ( and yes I still have the bowl ) Thus the notion that it would be an interesting hobby when I found the time. 35 years later I purchased my first lathe!! and have now been turning for about 14 years. Entirely self taught, the fascination for me is the anticipation and exploration of the grain and colours contained within each new piece and producing the shape and form that show them to best advantage. For further details of the lathe and other machinery I use please go to My Workshop.

My Method of Working

Almost all of my timber is obtained from a local tree surgeon and would have otherwise been chipped or burnt.  I generally like to work with freshly felled timber whenever I can.
Each piece being part turned to between ½” to 1” thick then allowed to dry for between 4 and 12 months depending on species and time of year, after which  they will be turned a second time and then finished. A total of about two days are spent working on each of the larger pieces, though this is of course spread over a number of months dependant on how long each one takes to dry.
